This workbook introduces Situational Leadership®, a flexible model by Paul Hersey, which emphasizes adapting leadership style to the performance readiness of individuals or teams. It defines two key leader behaviors: Task (Directive) and Relationship (Supportive), which combine into four leadership styles: Directing (S1), Coaching (S2), Participating (S3), and Delegating (S4).

The core of the model lies in assessing "Performance Readiness®," determined by an individual's Competence (ability) and Commitment (willingness), leading to four readiness levels (R1 to R4).

The document outlines a four-step process for applying Situational Leadership® as a change maker:

  • Identify the Specific Change or Task: Clearly define the change or task.
  • Assess Performance Readiness®: Evaluate the ability and willingness of individuals for that specific task.
  • Match Your Leadership Style: Apply the appropriate leadership style (S1-S4) based on the readiness level (R1-R4).
  • Communicate, Advance, and Review: Explain your approach, aim to advance individuals to higher readiness levels, and regularly reassess and adapt your style.

The workbook also highlights how Situational Leadership® aligns with a change maker mindset, promoting adaptability, empowerment, and resourcefulness. It suggests practical tools like the GROW model, scaling questions, active listening, powerful questions, and feedback to enhance its application. The overall goal is to lead change with intent and adaptability, empowering others to drive positive impact.
