We all feel it – a desire to make things better, to shift the status quo, to create a positive impact on our world. But how do you turn that spark of an idea into a roaring movement that not only captures attention but also fuels meaningful change? The answer lies in understanding how to build a movement that engages people and provokes them into action.

Start With Your 'Why'

Before you try to rally others, you need to be crystal clear on your own motivations. It begins with your purpose, your passions, and what you're truly capable of delivering. Ask yourself:

  • What is the change you want to see?

  • Why does this change matter to you?

  • What are your values, and how do they align with this change?

  • What impact do you want to have?

This self-reflection will be your foundation.

The Power of One (Plus Two)

Forget the notion that you need the backing of senior executives or a massive budget right away. A movement starts with a single person joining your cause.

  • Find your first ally: This is someone who believes in your vision, is willing to support you with their time and resources, and will be a partner in building your idea.

  • Then find your second: Now, there are three of you, a small but powerful nucleus with a shared commitment and the ideas to move forward.

  • This initial group becomes the core of your movement, and it's from here that your ideas begin to build credibility.

The Hillside Effect

There’s a powerful analogy of a man dancing on a hillside. Initially, he looks a bit crazy, but as one person joins him, then another, the energy becomes infectious. This illustrates how a small group of people acting together can inspire others to join in.

  • Be the energy: Like the first dancer, you must be enthusiastic and passionate about your idea.

  • Create a ripple: Encourage others to join and share in the vision.

  • Let it grow: Once the movement gains momentum, it’s no longer just your idea. It becomes a shared cause.

Building the Structure

With the hillside effect in motion, you need a more coordinated approach:

  • Communicate: Ensure that your message is clear, concise and easy to understand.

  • Engage Key Stakeholders: Identify individuals who can represent the broader mission.

  • Evolve Strategy: As the movement grows, refine your strategies, and create an understanding of what you're advocating for.

  • Build a belief system: Develop a collective belief system.

Provoke and Engage

To truly capture people's attention, you need to be both engaging and provocative. Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo, to ask difficult questions, and to push people outside of their comfort zones:

  • Be bold: Don't shy away from risks and brave decisions.

  • Ask “Why?”: Question why things are done a certain way.

  • Inspire: Be infectious with your energy and drive. Show people that change is possible.

  • Offer a Vision: Paint a picture of what things could be like if people joined your movement.

  • Be Inclusive: Allow others to contribute their ideas

Resources Will Follow

Once you have a movement of committed people, you can approach leaders for support. Your request will have much more substance than just a technical idea because you'll also have the passion and followership to back it up:

  • Verbal Support: Request that leaders use their communication channels.

  • Time and People: Request formal time for people to spend on your change-making program, and assign jobs to it.

  • Financial Support: Now is the time to secure the financial resources you need to expand the change.

Leading From the Heart

As your movement grows, embrace leading from the heart. This involves:

  • Servant Leadership: Put the needs of the team first.

  • Systematic Thinking: Understand how actions have a ripple effect.

  • Moral Compass: Stay true to your values.

  • Empowerment: Help others become change makers themselves.

The Journey of a Change Maker

Building a movement is a journey, not a destination. Be prepared to:

  • Pause, Decide, Act: Reflect before taking action, make brave decisions, and then act with intention.

  • Iterate: Learn from your actions and adjust your course as necessary.

  • Embrace Polarities: Understand that you need to balance opposing forces.

  • Keep Your Head: Stay composed even during difficult moments.

One Moment at a Time

Ultimately, building a movement is about making the world a better place, one moment at a time. As you move forward, carry the spirit of collaboration and shared achievement with you. Remember, it's through many small, pivotal moments that we, as one human team, create something truly extraordinary.
