One work week in and it's already stressful but it's also still time to say Happy New Year! I hope you’ve had a chance to breathe, reset, and perhaps spend some quality time away from the screen.

I was struck by a bit of news: the Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year for 2025 was "rage bait." You know the stuff - those posts designed specifically to make us angry so we click more. It feels like a perfect description of the "extractive" world we’re trying to leave behind. But as we step into 2026, I’m feeling a deep sense of stubborn optimism.

My theme for this fortnight is "The Resilience of the Ground-Up." While the big headlines can feel overwhelming, the real magic is happening in the "tinkering." It’s in the community sheds, the new ethical investment platforms, and the leaders who are quietly rebuilding trust where it’s been eroded. We’re not just hoping for a better future; we’re choosing it through our daily, practical acts.

Here are a few stories that have caught my eye over the last two weeks:

1. Leading Beyond the Solo Act

We’ve long been told the lie of the "lone genius," but the 2026 New Year Honours list tells a different story. It’s a celebration of network leaders - people who grow the power of others while their own power fades.

Recognition where it's due: A huge congratulations to Georgina Wilson (OBE) and Sandra Igwe (MBE). Their work with BUD Leaders and The Motherhood Group shows exactly what happens when you build a movement rooted in community.

A personal reflection: I’ve been thinking about my own transition back into the corporate arena. I’m looking for a role that bridges that "Nuclear to Neural" gap - using AI not just for efficiency, but to unlock real human value.

Something to think about: Are you acting as a Starter, a Connector, or a Doer this week? (Hint: You don't have to be all three at once!)

2. Is Your Capital "Speaking" Your Values?

The conversation about our capital - our Time, Treasure, Talent, Ties, Testimony, and Trust - is getting a lot louder.

  • The "Value" of Impact: We’re seeing a massive shift where "impact" is no longer just a nice-to-have. It’s becoming financially material. Companies that are honest about their sustainability data are actually getting cheaper loans. Doing good is finally becoming the savvy financial move.

  • Innovations in Fintech have led to the rise of sustainable robo-advisers that allow retail investors to connect directly with solar projects or ethical banks.

3. The Tinkerers are Winning

From high-tech labs to local community hubs, here are a few acts worth your attention:

  • The MENtor Shed: In Yaxley, a simple woodworking project is bringing different generations together to fix things and build connections. It’s proof that "community wealth" starts with simple, shared activity.

  • Innovation for Independence: At CES 2026, the "WheelMove" attachment was a standout. It’s a simple add-on that turns a manual wheelchair into an electric one. It’s not "disruptive tech" for the sake of it; it’s tech that actually helps people show up in the world.

  • The Scottish CWB Bill: Scotland is leading the way in hardwiring local economic resilience into law. It’s a bold step that ensures money stays in the community rather than leaking out.

A Provocation for You

If you stopped trying to "fix" your problems and instead said "yes" to the subject that arouses a "terrifying longing" in you, what would you start doing today?

Let’s stop scrolling and start tinkering.

Onwards, Stuart
