Beyond Eco-Anxiety: Unlocking the Psychology of Regeneration

Today is Earth Day, but instead of the usual slogans, I’m find myself reflecting on a much more difficult question: If we know the planet is in trouble, why aren’t we moving faster?

This evening, I’m joining a collaboration at The Conduit with Climate and Nature, Psychology for Change, and Learning and Social Justice communities to explore exactly that. We’re moving past the what of climate change and digging into the how - specifically, how we shift the human psyche from paralysis to action.

The Barrier: Why We Stay Still

Psychology tells us that the human brain isn't naturally wired for the climate crisis. We are evolved to react to immediate, tangible threats (a predator in the grass) rather than slow-moving, abstract, global ones. Traditional education often relies on the deficit model - the idea that if we just give people more scary facts, they’ll change.

In reality, fear often leads to shut-down, not spark. To move from inaction to impact, we have to address:

  • Cognitive Dissonance: The discomfort of knowing our lifestyle harms the planet, which often leads us to downplay the crisis to protect our peace of mind.

  • The Individualism Trap: Feeling like our small actions don’t matter in a massive system.

The Shift: From Extractive to Regenerative

The core of tonight’s discussion is the move toward a Regenerative Mindset. This isn't just about sustainability (maintaining the status quo). It’s about active restoration.

How Do We Unblock Action?

The panel tonight suggests that the secret lies in dynamic decision-making and social justice. We cannot expect people to care about the end of the world if they are worried about the end of the month. By integrating social justice and psychology, we create a model of change that feels inclusive and empowering rather than elitist or restrictive.

A Question for You

As I head into these table discussions tonight, I’m sitting with the central theme of the event:

How can I, and we, move from extractive to regenerative?

It starts with changing the way we think about our role in the world. It’s not just about what we take, but what we leave behind. I’m looking forward to sharing the insights and unblocked ideas that come out of tonight’s session.

What is one small way you’ve shifted your own mindset this year?
