Pivotal Moments - Applying Principled Courage

Nine years ago, just weeks into my new role at a Salesforce, I faced a career-defining choice. I was still in my probationary period, absorbing the incredible pace of the organisation, when my boss called. They needed me to dive in early to lead the experience design phase for a major client that was struggling to get value out of their technology investment.
The catch for me? The client was a massive global tobacco company.

I had joined Salesforce specifically because I was inspired by its ethos that business should be a platform for positive change. Furthermore, the issue was deeply personal: I had recently lost one of my closest friends to lung cancer caused by secondary smoke.
I knew that pushing back so early carried a massive risk. Refusing my very first assignment could instantly label me a "difficult employee" and jeopardise my new career. Despite the fear, I told my boss, "I'm really sorry, but I cannot work for a tobacco company". I made it clear I was willing to travel anywhere and work as hard as needed, but I fundamentally refused to compromise my moral compass for an industry I believed caused harm.
That decision was a pivotal moment. It set a firm stake in the ground for the type of leader I was going to be. And the universe quickly aligned - just weeks later, I was assigned to a different struggling project. By applying that same principled courage to push back against a legacy blame culture and unrealistic demands, our team turned that engagement into a record-breaking transformational deal.
Why You Need to Identify Pivotal Moments
Pivotal moments test our "Moral Courage". Taking the time to reflect on these moments builds ethical resilience. It helps you and your team understand that setting firm boundaries isn't about being difficult; it's about maintaining the integrity required to do truly transformational work. When you know your non-negotiables, you can navigate chaos and complexity with clarity and stability.
An Exercise to Unlock Pivotal Moments with Your Team
Try this simple exercise at your next team offsite or strategy session to build a culture of psychological safety and shared ownership:
The Reflection: Ask everyone to write down one moment where they had to make a decision that felt incredibly risky or unpopular, but fundamentally "right".
The Value Extraction: Have them identify the single core value that drove that decision (e.g. Courage, Equality, Honesty, Trust).
The Application: Discuss as a group: "If we apply that same courage to the biggest challenge our business is facing today, what is the hard truth we need to admit? What is the bold decision we are currently avoiding?"
When we share these moments, we break the myth of the solitary hero. We build a collective, stronger team capable of driving authentic, systemic progress.
