In the first post we looked at igniting change and finding our spark in challenging times. In the second we considered a world demanding constant evolution and how the Change-Maker Leader isn't just an asset – they are the architects of a better tomorrow.


This led us to the third post where I had to admit that the inspiration for this series of posts came from a deep frustration with how too many people are attracted to leaders who seem to inspire change but are narcissistic. We took a stab at reframing leadership against this frustration.


Now let's have a proper look at how Change-Maker Leaders can effectively draw followers away from Narcissistic Leaders. This feels kind of important right now... don't you agree?

Narcissistic Leaders, while often initially charming and confident, tend to create environments characterised by a focus on themselves, a lack of empathy, and often manipulative tactics. These traits can eventually lead to disillusionment and a desire for a more positive and genuinely impactful leadership style.


Change-Maker Leaders, on the other hand, attract followers by embodying qualities that directly address the shortcomings of narcissistic leadership and offer a more compelling alternative. Here's how:


Authentic Vision for a Better Future

Change-Maker Leaders articulate a clear and inspiring vision that genuinely aims to make things better for people and the planet. This contrasts sharply with the often grandiose but ultimately self-serving visions projected by Narcissistic Leaders. People are drawn to a cause that transcends individual ego and offers a sense of collective purpose. The genuine excitement and deep personal reason driving a Change-Maker Leader's vision are contagious and motivate others to join their journey.


Emphasis on Collaboration and Empowerment 

Unlike the controlling nature of Narcissistic Leaders, Change-Maker Leaders excel at talking clearly and working together. They create welcoming environments where different opinions are valued. Critically, they focus on helping others shine, providing the tools and encouragement for individuals to become change-makers themselves. This fosters a sense of ownership and agency, which is often stifled under a narcissistic leader's rule. By empowering others, Change-Maker Leaders build a strong, interconnected team where contributions are recognised and celebrated.


Demonstration of Empathy and Genuine Care

Change-Maker Leaders care deeply about people. This empathy allows them to understand the needs and emotions of their followers, fostering trust and loyalty. This is a stark contrast to the lack of empathy often displayed by Narcissistic Leaders, who may disregard the well-being of others for their own gain. The people-oriented skills of a Change-Maker Leader, such as showing care and listening actively, build stronger connections.


Integrity and Trustworthiness

Change-Maker Leaders act ethically, take responsibility for their actions, and align their values with their decisions. This integrity builds trust, a crucial element often eroded under narcissistic leadership characterised by manipulation and exploitation. Leading by example, with fairness and trust, as Change-Maker Leaders do, creates a stable and reliable environment that followers crave.


Focus on Sustainable Impact over Self-Promotion

While Narcissistic Leaders often seek attention and admiration, Change-Maker Leaders are focused on the long-term effects of their decisions and balancing success with doing good. Their drive for change is anchored by a strong reason and a desire for tangible outcomes, not just personal glory. This focus on genuine impact resonates with individuals who want their efforts to contribute to something meaningful beyond the leader's ego.


Adaptability and Resilience 

Change-Maker Leaders are tough, flexible, and willing to take a few chances, adapting to evolving situations and learning from setbacks. This adaptability and resilience. provide a sense of stability and forward momentum that can be absent in the often erratic and ego-driven actions of a Narcissistic Leader. Their ability to go with the flow and guide others through transitions provides reassurance in uncertain times.


Building a Movement, Not a Cult

Change-Maker Leaders aim to build a movement for change, fostering a collective of individuals driven by a shared purpose. This is fundamentally different from the dynamic around a Narcissistic Leader, which can resemble a "corporate cult" where followers are overly devoted to a charismatic figure and critics are marginalised. The inclusive and collaborative nature of a Change-Maker Leader's approach empowers individuals rather than creating dependence.


In essence, Change-Maker Leaders offer a leadership experience grounded in genuine purpose, collaboration, empathy, and integrity. As the negative impacts of a Narcissistic Leader's self-serving behaviour become apparent, followers are naturally drawn to the more positive, empowering, and ultimately more sustainable leadership offered by those committed to making a real difference. The focus shifts from the leader's ego to the collective good, fostering a sense of belonging and shared achievement that is profoundly more rewarding.
